Here's an interesting fact that I just learned while researching EFAs and how they relate to health: Raising levels of essential fatty acids in the diets of those with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder may help to reduce symptoms and behaviors of the condition.
That's good news for parents and teachers everywhere! The study showed low levels of both Omega-3 and Omega-6 in children with ADHD and thus concluded that with replacement of these EFAs to their diets, via food sources or supplimentation, they could lessen or eliminate symptoms caused by the condition. I decided to share this in my blog because sometimes I feel as though I suffer from such a condition, only mildly though. I feel more, though, that the more children I see getting fed a not-so-nutritious diet of sugar, candy, soda and processed foods the more I am able to recognize their behavior as having ADHD tendencies, NO JOKE!! Also, my friend (we'll call him) Superman informed me yesterday after I did my research that he had been supplimenting with salmon oil to reduce his own ADHD behavioral tendencies. This was what really encouraged me to blog about such a topic because it proved to me that it was a very valid topic in relation to health, not only to the bone health but to mental health, as well.

Every day you learn something new and todays info is actually pretty vital for me. Someone in my family, I'll refer to him as little superman, was recently diagnosed with ADHD and his mom is considering treating with drugs. I'll make sure to pass the Omega 3 and 6 info along. I really think that a change in his diet could make a huge difference in his behavior. Thanks for doing the research.
Wow thats really interesting to know that it EFA aids in people with ADHD. I have always been in favor of the idea that through the right diet one does not need medication. I think the problem is that parents don't know what to feed their children and they are contributing to the problem by giving them certain foods. A lot of people in my family have been diagnosed wtih ADD and have been on meds at one point, but I don't think thats it's healthy in the long run. I know that avoiding simple sugars and simple CHOs is important but it's good to hear about EFA!
Wow! You and "Superman" may be on to something here. Understanding how nutrition affects mental health has always been something I've wanted to learn more about. Having worked with many kids diagnosed as ADHD and prescribed Ritalin excessively (in my humble, non-professional opinion) I can relate to the need for other more healthy alternative treatments.
Great info Cristiana! I swear this country has an addiction to treating people with band-aid therapy when all they need is exercise and the right diet. I've long suspected that behavioral problems (ADHD, depression, bipolarity, etc) in a great number of people are due to an imbalance in lifestyle, resulting in reduced well being. Preventative, or evolutionary, medicine seems to be the best way to go. Great job on your blog :)
WOW! That really is interesting! I too have my ADD and even mild ADHD moments, looks like I'm going to need to stay on top of my EFA intake! haha
