Omega 3 fatty acids such as EPA aid in increasing levels of calcium in the body. It is a catalyses calcium deposit calcium in the bones and improves their strength. A study also states that people with low levels of certain omega 3's are prone to suffer from bone loss when compared to those with normal levels of these EFA's. A study showed that women who were 65 years and over with osteoporosis that were given EFA suppliments experienced significantly less boneloss over 3 years than those who were given a placebo. Many of them also experienced increased bone density.
All around, EFA's promote healthy bones by adding to density and acting as a catalyst for calcium deposit and increased levels thereof.

Have you found any more about the role of EFAs and bone health? I think EFA's are amazing in how they play a role in just about every function of the body. I am familiar with their role in cardiovascular and mental health (ADHD) and also in controlling inflamation, but I don't know about their role in bone health.
I take cod liver oil for the DHA and EPA and the vitamin D and I can really tell a difference in my focus and mood when I take it regularly.
I know of a website that you may be interested in - omegaresearch.com There is some good info there.
thanks for the blog!
I enjoyed reading the information on Essential Fatty Acids, because the health benefits are becoming more vast, but still many are unaware of how benefitial they are. Has it been difficult to find much relation in essential fatty acids and bone health, because teh studies are still new and far between. I fthere is more I can't wait to hear it.
I work with preschool children and over the years have seen much promotion of EFA's with young children, because of their effect on hyperactivity and ADHD which is something so many children seem to be "diagnosed" with these days. I too have a small child and getting Omega 3's in her diet otehr than supplement s is hard, but my diet is very rich due to the fact taht I eat a lot of wild ocean fish like steelhead and salmon, so it is great to learn that I am better protecting my bones for the future.
Thanks for all of the info!!
Wow, that's really interesting! So it helps speed the deposition of calcium in bones? Cool deal!
